2003 WGU Chairman
Cup International Gateball Championship
in Chinese Tipei
First Time for India Team to Participate in International Championship! |
Chinese Taipei Gateball Association hosted the
2003 2nd World Gateball Union (WGU) Chairman Cup International GB Championship
on November 15 -16,2003.at the Jung He City Sports Ground in Chinese Taipei. 5
teams from Singapore, 5 from Korea, 5 from Hong Kong China, 2 from India, 1 from
China, 1 from Japan and a huge local contingent of165 teams participated. Representatives
from all Asian members of the WGU participated. India, where gateball began only
in recent years and participating for the first time, received a lot of attention.
On this occasion a section for handicapped players was held with 32 teams participating.
Participants in wheelchairs and using crutches executed accurate shots, and play.
Also, local elementary school children acted as backstage volunteers making this
a cooperative event with the local community. Regarding the results; a local team
won the tournament. The Japanese Musashino Team unfortunately did not reach the
finals tournament. Captain Yamazaki, who has supported the promotion of gateball
in Chinese Taipei, said, "The competition level was high and it was a wonderful
friendship tournament." The big topic this time was undoubtedly the India teams'
entry in an international tournament. They were young teams made up of members
under thirty years old, including some in their teens. We can expect them to be
active in future international events. The Japan Gateball Union plans gateball
promotion activities in India and Nepal January 22 - February 2. |
