The first Gateball training workshop for Physical Education Teachers was held in Uganda
The Uganda Gateball Union was founded in 2017 in Kampala, the capital city.
Currently, UGU has 186 members and is trying to promote Gateball in Uganda as well as in the neighboring African countries.
Let us share our activities. We organized the first training workshop which is aimed at training trainers, mainly considering to train Physical Education Teachers and Schools Games Masters on 5th April at Gombe Secondary School in Butambala District. At that workshop, we trained 68 trainers who came from 68 different schools from Butambala District. In other words, 68 schools were represented and they got their sports masters qualified as basic coaches for the Great sport of Gateball. Upon the completion of the training, every participant was awarded with a certificate. Mr. Naoyuki Shima, the coordinator of economic operations at the Embassy of Japan in Uganda, attended the event and handed over the certificates to the participants during the closing ceremony.
The training was conducted in two sessions. In the morning session, we trained participants the theory of Gateball, its rules and tactics using power point presentations on a projector and the videos. We also distributed the brochure, SPARK. In the afternoon session, we conducted the practical session in which every person had a chance to actually play Gateball.
Later we also had some competitions among the participants who were all excited about playing Gateball and everyone did not want to finish and wanted to continue. Yet the time was limited we had to go for the closing ceremony where certificates were awarded.
Also one set of equipment was given to Gombe Secondary School which hosted the event.

We had one big challenge! Since every participant represented a school, every participant wanted equipment to take to their schools such that they can start training their students and also continue to play Gateball. But it was not possible with the limited amount of equipment.
At the same time, we realised that this is a great initiative for spreading Gateball because we train a great number of trainers then they become ambassadors of Gateball and go and train students in their schools and as well introduce Gateball to communities, in the near future we are going to hold a schools Gateball tournament and as well start a Gateball league for clubs.

The workshop was reported in the newspaper “New Vision”.
